    Fractal Software
by Edwin Young, in Category Reviews - Saturday, April 26th 2003 00:00 PST

Ever since I first stayed up late watching an 8-bit computer painstakingly draw a Mandelbrot set, I've been fascinated by fractals. Of course, I had to write a fractal-generating program of my own straight away; the combination of the amazingly simple math required to produce the Mandelbrot set and the amazing graphics that came out was irresistible. Clearly, I'm not alone; every programmer with even the slightest interest in math writes a fractal program at some point, and a good number of these are now available as Open Source. Here's a brief, opinionated, and decidedly non-exhaustive survey of some of the programs I've found.

    dvd::rip 0.50.11 (Stable)
by Jörn Reder - Saturday, April 26th 2003 09:46 PST

About: dvd::rip is a full featured DVD copy program written in Perl. It provides an easy-to-use but feature-rich GTK+ GUI to control almost all aspects of the ripping and transcoding process. It uses the widely known video processing swissknife, transcode, and many other Open Source tools.

Changes: This release fixes a bunch of minor bugs. "dvdrip -v" reported nothing instead of the version number. Transcoding movies without audio in between the first few MB didn't work. A workaround for a transcode bug which prevents correct fps detection from DVD source was applied. The progress bar isn't messed up anymore wheen PSU core is enabled. The cluster mode doesm't depend anymore on dr_exec to be installed on remote nodes.

    Worm Warner 2.0
    by jnieuwen - Saturday, April 26th 2003 09:44 PST

About: WormWarner is a Perl script that is used to warn hosts that are probably infected by a worm. It decides wether a host is infected by analyzing the data from the Apache log files. It currently recognizes CodeRed, Nimda, the Linux.Slapper.Worm, and the FreeBSD.Scalper.worm. Warning is done by trying to contact the SMTP server on the infected host and sending an email to the postmaster.

Changes: Wormwarner now runs as a daemon which lets it respond within minutes after an infection attempt. The abuse.net database is queried before starting whois queries to find the email address of the ISP to warn. Code cleanups were also made.

About: hdup is used to back up a filesystem. Features include encryption of the archive (with mcrypt), compression of the archive (bzip/gzip/none), the ability to transfer the archive to a remote host or restoring from a remote host (with ssh), and no obscure archive format (it is a normal compressed tar file).

Changes: An option to split up archives was added, which can be turned on by using the keyword "chunk size". All user supplied information is now sanitized before it's used.

About: WebTK is a Python framework, using Twisted as its underlying Web server, and allowing webmasters to develop websites like any classic GUI software. It is object-oriented, providing and handling event-based widgets. It also does not need any database to work, as it uses object persistence with the help of PyPerSyst.

Changes: New data types, use of styles/CSS to render the widgets, a new high-level widget Poll, and lots of minor enhancements/bugfixes.

by Guido Draheim - Saturday, April 26th 2003 07:02 PST

About: ZZIPlib provides read access on ZIP-archives. The library uses only the patent-free compression-algorithms supported by zlib. It is written in portable C.

Changes: This release adds some bugfixes and changes in the build system to allow for subdir builds.

    Autoconf Macro Archive 0.5.51 (SF-NET)
by Guido Draheim - Saturday, April 26th 2003 06:58 PST

About: The Autoconf Macro Archive provides documented and tested macros that are useful to many software writers using the autoconf tool, but too specific to be included into autoconf itself.

Changes: Macros can now be marked "obsolete" instead of just being deleted; the "acinclude" tool will detect and warn about the situation and recommend an alternative. More documentation has been added, and some steps taken to merge the branches.

About: Darcs is an advanced revision control system along the lines of CVS or arch. IzPack 3.0.8 (Stable)
by Julien Ponge - Saturday, April 26th 2003 05:23 PST

About: IzPack is a powerful Java installer builder. It is able to create lightweight and modular installers. You have the choice of the installer panels you want to use (some can do the same job, so that you can select the one you prefer), and you even have the choice of the kind of installer that you want to use. IzPack doesn't use any portion of native code, it is designed to be fully independent from the operating system that runs it. It is very easy for the end user with a properly installed JVM to use an installer made with IzPack, since a single "java -jar installer.jar" will launch it.

Changes: This release adds Packs OS targeting, improved OS selection accuracy, a Russian langpack update, and a directory creation patch. The standard installers can now use the native look and feel if the "useNativeLAF" resource is specified (a nice feature, especially with the incoming JDK 1.4.2). The standard installers get back the button icons and highlighting effects.

  • # <i>OFFICIAL BUG REPORT FOR TEMPLEET. MODULE: ``LINUXFR"</i>
